Restrict the sender: open their profile > … > Restrict. Their DMs move to Requests, which you can read without sending Seen until you accept or reply. Unrestrict later if needed.
Use notification previews: in Instagram > Notifications > Messages, enable previews. Also set iOS/Android lock‑screen previews to Always. Read from notifications to avoid Seen.
If it’s a Message Request, don’t accept it; read it in Requests.

For devices you own/manage (e.g., a child’s phone), mSpy can mirror Instagram messages to a web dashboard so you can review them without opening Instagram, which avoids read receipts. It also offers keyword alerts and periodic screenshots. Only use on devices where you have proper authorization.

Toggle off Read receipts / Show read receipts
Notes:
If you have this switch, you can open chats normally and no Seen will be sent.
If you don’t see it, update the app; rollout isn’t 100% in every region yet.

Use Message Requests or Restrict

If someone isn’t in your contacts/follows, read their DM in Message Requests without accepting; no Seen is sent.
To temporarily move a chat into Requests: open the conversation > tap the name (or i) > Restrict. Their messages go to Requests; read there without Seen. Unrestrict later if you want.
Tip: Don’t tap Accept while you want to stay unseen.

Read from notifications (no app open)
